Oil portrait of a young noblewoman in a blue dress and lace with an imposing hat decorated with flowers and feathers, placed on a wig in the fashion of the 18th century. The painter's attention on her nose underlined by the delicate presence of the peony she is holding in her hand obviously puts us in the presence of the image of a smell.

One can imagine the sophisticated fashion of the XVIII century, the white powder perfumed with camphor to whiten the complexion, the rice powder with the smell of chypre of the extravagant blue-grey wig overhung by a hat decorated with a very fragrant composition of roses and jasmine flowers, feathers and leaves, worn by the young woman, mingled with the lemony scent of fresh peony and violet floral water matching her garment, not to mention the heady smell of turpentine from the oil paint, we get a chatty snapshot far from the model's softly embarrassed smile betrayed by her incredible nose without which we would not have come to imagine these scents.

Rosier à feuilles de laitue (Rosa centifolia Bullata)

The perfume of the rose develops when it is in bud, the old roses very abundant in petals smell stronger, but what is remarkable is that everything of the old rose is odorous, from the stem to the leaves or the petals emanates a rich and musky smell.
